Jenny Blake, an author, blogger, life coach, Googler and yoga teacher, speaks to a new way of looking at career in her talk, “The Career in the Age of the App”.
Her main point is that the old career path metaphor of climbing a corporate ladder is out of date. Instead, she proposes that we think about career like a smart phone. Each job, class, or activity we pursue provides us with a new app, or specific skillset. As we move through different jobs and positions we add to our collection of apps. Jenny notes that the benefits of this model are that it is “dynamic, fluid, and non-linear”. Plus, even if you are not in an ideal job situation you can still take heart that you are adding to your ‘apps’ by considering the different skillsets you are learning at your current job.
This talk will likely resonate most with overachievers, as Jenny shares her personal experience of constantly pushing herself up the ladder of success and the resulting burnout that ensued.
