Article Review: Solving Gen Y’s Passion Problem
by: Cal Newport
Cal Newport tackles the advice to ‘follow your passion’ in his recent article for the Harvard Business Review. While fundamentally agreeing with the aspiration of a fulfilling working life, he questions whether these three words (follow your passion) fully and accurately convey the path to such an aim.
In particular Newport notes that excellent careers take time to build, involve dues paying, and often traverse a more winding path than we as outsiders looking in may realize.
I appreciated Newport’s perspective and agree with his argument that we could use a more nuanced cultural guide for career decisions.
What do you think? What other cultural career messages have you heard that have either helped or hindered you?
