Last month I had the privilege of stopping by Career TEAM to teach a session to a group of women participating in their programs. Career TEAM helps people on government assistance enter the workforce.
As we worked together it became apparent that these women were intent on breaking the cycle of governmental reliance. They were motivated to create a better life for their children and themselves.
“At this point I don’t mind if I’m cleaning bathrooms. I just want a job,” one of the participants said.
While the women were determined to make a change, they also had plenty of fear around leaving their current familiar circumstances.
To assist them in understanding why such a change would be worthwhile I had them brainstorm the benefits of having a job.
Initially they came up with financial rewards and benefits like:
- paycheck
- paid sick days
- paid vacation
- retirement/ 401K and
- health insurance.
- feeling proud to have a job
- taking personal responsibility
- feeling good going to work each day
- setting a positive example for my kids
- feeling less stressed about finances
- making a difference and
- having a schedule to my days.
