When my clients first come to me they feel lost and stuck around their career. They have a fairly good idea of what they don’t want to be doing (usually their current jobs), but they have a big question mark around what would be a better fit. What would feel less heavy and more ‘them’?
Through my coaching process we work together to figure out what my clients really want to do with their careers, and I can always tell when we’ve hit on something good because the energy and enthusiasm in their voices is unmistakable.
It’s a huge deal to go from feeling completely lost about career direction to knowing, ‘Aha!, that’s the destination I want to work for’.
And it’s also the beginning of a much longer journey.
To my clients with big dreams and to those of you in my audience who are going after things that sometimes feel crazy, impossible, or overwhelming, today I want to encourage you to hang in there and keep putting one foot in front of the other.
Dreams don’t usually come true overnight. They are the result of persistent action day after day after day.
So be persistent. Keep going for your dreams. Do one small thing in service of them today. And be sure to ask for help when you get stuck.
One of my all-time favorite quotes is from Anne Lamott. She writes, “Hope begins in the dark, the stubborn hope that if you just show up and try to do the right thing, the dawn will come. You wait and watch and work: You don’t give up.”

I am at a crossroads, my children are grown and I divorced and event though I have a degree and as I write it I laugh. Bachelor of Science in General Studies, even in school I couldnt make up my mind. I one day want to be a cosmetologist, the next a real estate broker, the next a physical therapist, the next a florist, (which I did with my ex for 26 years) the next go back to school for MBA or maybe a law degree. THe problem, I cant figure out what I want. The single thing I do know is that I want to be my own boss and in charge and help others but yet I cant narrow down which direction and truely which career. I love my cosmetic business but have areas of difficulty and need more, so I am trying to figure out what my more is.. ugggh it makes me feel like such a failure not knowing. Many people always tell me you are so good at what you do, ( Mary Kay) and I have been told that I would be great as a cosmetologist too and both go hand in hand, yet somehow I just cant seem to be ok with it..AS soon as i think yes this is what I want, i find myself looking at other options. or as soon as I almost get to the next level of success I self sabatoge.. I dont understand why..
Sorry to hear that you’re having such a tough time! I’m going to message you offline.
I thought for a long time that I knew what I wanted to do. I have a BA degree in Archaeology and last year did a Masters in Museum and Gallery Studies. My dissertation was on human remains repatriation in museums. I still love the subject, but there are about 5 jobs in the whole of the uk that specialise in this. I’m thinking that I will never get a job in this field and need to come up with a new career plan. i can’t stay in my awful office job waiting for my dream job to present itself. I need a new idea, but i’m stuck!
Sorry to hear that you’re having such a hard time Faye! Would you be open to looking for a job that lines up with your interests internationally? Perhaps broadening the location of your search would be helpful for finding such a specialized job. IF you still have trouble after that then you might ask yourself why you liked Archaeology and Museum and Gallery Studies in the first place. By pulling on some of those themes you might be able to find a related field that you would also enjoy.
